The life of Joseph

Genesis 30:

• Born of Rachel

Genesis 37:

• Becomes chief shepherd Joseph is 17
• Jacob makes a special coat for Joseph
• Brothers didn’t like him because Jacob loved him most
• Joseph had a dream that he would rule over them and they hated him more
• Joseph had another dream that he would rule over them and his mother & father. Over the house of Jacob.
• Brothers plot to kill Joseph but Reuben convinces them to throw him in a pit instead so that he might return Joseph to Jacob later
• Brothers striped Joseph of his coat and threw him in a pit
• Judah suggests they sell Joseph to the on coming Ishmeelites, they agree and sold him into slavery for 20 pieces of silver
• Reuben returned to the pit, Joseph was gone, Reuben was upset and told his brothers
• Brothers dipped Joseph’s coat in goat blood, took it to Jacob, and told him Joseph was dead
• Joseph was eventually sold to slavery in Egypt

Genesis 39:

• Joseph becomes overseer of his Egyptian master’s house
• The Egyptian master’s wife tries to seduce Joseph, he denies, and she falsely accuses him
• Joseph goes to prison and becomes head of the prisoners for the prison keeper

Genesis 40:

• Joseph interprets the chief butler and chief baker’s dreams while they were in prison. The chief butler would be restored to his position in 3 days, and the chief baker would be beheaded and hanged from a tree for birds to eat in 3 days. The dream interpretations come to pass.

Genesis 41:

• Joseph interprets Pharaoh’s dream. There would be 7 years of feast and 7 years of famine to come. Joseph tells him to hire someone to gather corn during the 7 feast years so that they could survive through the 7 famine years.
• Joseph is made Prime Minister of Egypt, put in charge of everything up to the Pharaoh’s throne. Joseph gathers corn during the 7 feast years, the 7 famine years begin and he starts to sell the corn. Egypt is made rich in property. Joseph is 30

Genesis 42:

• Jacob send his sons, other than Benjamin, to buy corn in Egypt. Joseph recognizes them, insinuates they are spies, ends up keeping Simeon and telling the rest to return with Benjamin to prove otherwise. He gives them corn and puts their money back in their sacks.

Genesis 43:

• Jacob won’t let Benjamin go, they run out of corn, Judah convinces Jacob (on Judah’s life) to let Benjamin go. They go, Simeon is set free, and they have lunch with Joseph.

Genesis 44:

• Joseph sells them corn, puts their money back again, and puts his silver cup in Benjamin’s sack. Joseph sends his steward after them and they are accused of stealing the silver cup when it is found in Benjamin’s sack. Judah pleas with Joseph.

Genesis 45:

• Joseph breaks down and tells them who he is. They reunite and Pharaoh sends wagons back with them so that they could move to Egypt. Jacob agrees to go.

Genesis 46:

• Joseph is reunited with his brothers and father, Jacob Joseph is 39

Genesis 50:

• Joseph and his brothers along with Pharaoh’s servant, the elders of Joseph’s house, and all the house of Jacob take Jacob to Machpelah and bury him with Abraham
• Joseph dies Joseph is 110

The life of Jacob

Genesis 25:

• Born
• Tricks Esau out of his birthright

Genesis 27:

• Tricks Esau out of his blessing

Genesis 28:

• Isaac conveys Abrahamic Covenant
• On the way to Laban’s, Jacob stops overnight in Bethel and God comes to him in a dream where God is standing above (and angels were ascending and descending on) a ladder that reached from earth to heaven and God reiterates the Abrahamic Covenant to him.
• Jacob pledges tithes of 10% to God for all God will give him

Genesis 29:

• Jacob meets Rachel at a well, tells her who he is and they go to Laban’s, her father’s, house
• Jacob pledges 7 years of labor to Laban for the price of Rachel as his wife
• After 7 years, Laban tricks Jacob by sending his 1st daughter (Leah) into him during a party. The next morning Laban tells Jacob he has to take the firstborn (Leah) 1st and he could have Rachel after another 7 years of labor.
• Jacob does 7 years for Rachel and does even 7 more after getting Rachel
• Leah has 4 sons – Reuben, Simeon, Levi, and Judah

Genesis 30:

• Rachel envies her sister, Leah, and sends her handmaid, Bilhah, into Jacob to conceive
• Bilhah has 2 sons – Gad and Asher
• Rachel bargains with Leah to take the food Reuben brought from the field for for herself and give a night with Jacob
• God heard Leah’s prayer for more children
• Leah has 2 more sons – Issachar and Zebulun and a daughter – Dinah
• God hears Rachel’s prayers for children
• Rachel has a son – Joseph
• Jacob and his family leaves Laban, but not before bargaining with Laban to leave. Jacob does his final trick on Laban by getting him to agree to split the cattle, sheep, and goats. Laban takes the white and Jacob takes the spotted, colored, and all others.
• Jacob finishes his trickery on Laban by feeding the strong cattle, sheep, and goats (while Laban is away) peeled rods of green poplar and hazel and chestnut tress to get their color to change to spotted, colored, and anything other than white
• Jacob leaves Laban and leaves the feebler cattle, sheep, and goats with Laban and takes the stronger. Jacob increased exceedingly.

Genesis 31:

• Laban pursues Jacob because Laban’s teraphim (idols of gods) were missing along with all the sheep taken. Laban’s estate could possibly be claimed in the future with these. Rachel took the teraphim unknowing to anyone.
• Laban can’t find the idols in Jacob’s tribe. Jacob and Laban make a covenant of truce.

Genesis 32:

• Jacob prepares to reconcile with Esau, he separates into 2 bands in a defensive posture, moves his family over the brook Jabbok, and is left alone for the night
• Jacob wrestles with God throughout the night until God says he has to go. God touches his thigh and causes a permanent limp in Jacob’s leg. God changes Jacob’s name to Israel, and blesses him.

Genesis 33:

• Jacob reconciles with Esau, goes to Sucoth, builds a house and stays about 20 years. Then he continues to Shalem a city of Shechem.

Genesis 34:

• Dinah is raped by Shechem, Simeon and Levi (Dinah’s full brothers by Leah) kill all the men of Shechem in the city Shalem

Genesis 35:

• Jacob continues to Bethel where he was supposed to go originally before stopping at Shalem
• God reiterates Jacob’s name change to Israel and the Abrahamic Covenant to Jacob, and promised kings would come out of him
• On the way to Bethlehem Rachel has Benjamin and dies
• Reuben sleeps with Bilhah, Rachel’s handmaid, which causes his forfeiture of his firstborn birthright
• Isaac dies

Genesis 36:

• Generations of Esau, and they move to Edom

Genesis 42:

• Jacob sends his sons, except Benjamin, to Egypt for food. Simeon held at Egypt.

Genesis 43:

• Food runs out, Jacob sends his sons again (including Benjamin) to Egypt for food

Genesis 45:

• Jacob agree to move to Egypt

Genesis 46:

• God tells Jacob not to fear going to Egypt, while in Beersheba (7th time there), and that He will be with him. God reiterates to Jacob that he will make a great nation of him and He will bring them back from Egypt.
• Jacob is reunited with Joseph Jacob is 130

Genesis 47:

• Jacob is on his death bed Jacob is 147

Genesis 48:

• Jacob adopts Joseph’s sons Manasseh and Ephriam to the rank of firstborn

Genesis 49:

• Jacob blesses each of his sons and dies

Genesis 50:

• Jacob is buried in Machpelah with Abraham

 

 

 

The life of Isaac

Genesis 21:

• Born

Genesis 22:

• Offered Isaac is about 30

Genesis 23:

• Sarah dies at the age of 127 Isaac is 37

Genesis 24:

• Marries Rebekah Isaac is 40

Genesis 25:

• Abraham dies at the age of 175
• Esau and Jacob are born Isaac is 60
• Esau, at the point of dying, agrees to give his 1st born birth right to Jacob for a bowl of pottage. Jacob tricks Esau (Edom) out of his birth right and the hatred begins.

Genesis 26:

• God reiterates the Abrahamic Covenant to Isaac
• Isaac passes Rebekah off as his sister to Abimelech (a title of rulers of Philistia) so he can live and prosper in the land of the Philistines without being killed and having Rebekah taken
• Abimelech finds out Rebekah is Isaac’s wife, tells his people not to approach Rebekah, and allows Isaac and Rebekah to stay in their land and build riches
• Isaac’s riches grow too great and Abimelech sends him off
• Isaac moves to Gerar and re-digs the wells Abraham had dug
• God reiterates He will multiply Isaac’s seed (while in Beersheba), Isaac digs a well
• Isaac and Abimelech make a covenant that they will not hurt each other
• Esau, age 40, marries 2 Hittite women

Genesis 27:

• Isaac, on his death bed, asks Esau to kill and make him some venison, and he will bless Esau before he dies
• Rebekah hears Isaac and has Jacob bring 2 goats and she prepares them, then uses their hair to place on Jacob to have him seem as Esau to Isaac. Jacob takes the meat into Isaac, tricks him with the goat hair and gets the blessing meant for Esau.
• Esau takes his venison to Isaac after Jacob had left, and finds that Isaac was tricked into blessing Jacob. No blessing for Esau and the hatred continues.

Genesis 28:

• Isaac conveys the Abrahamic Covenant to Jacob and sends him away to Rebekah’s brother Laban to marry within the family

Genesis 35:

• Isaac dies Isaac is 180

There was a 6 decade overlap in the lives of Abraham and Noah.

The life of Abraham

Genesis 12:

• Called but only moves up river from Ur to Haran (for about 5 years)
• Abrahamic Covenant
• Father dies and Abraham goes to Canaan, the land God called him to. (Sarai) Sarah and Lot go too. Land promised again.  Abraham is 75
• Famine, Abraham takes Sarah and Lot to Egypt. Passes Sarah off as his sister, she was his 1/2 sister by Terah and his 2nd wife. Pharaoh sends Abraham away with his riches when he finds Sarah is his wife.

Genesis 13:

• Abraham and Lot split, Lot goes to Sodom
• Land and multitude of descendants promised again

Genesis 14:

• 4 kings warred against 5, won and took lot. Abraham trained 318 from his house and went against the 4 kings to retrieve Lot. Abraham takes no spoils.
• Abraham gives tithes to Melchizedek, king and priest of Salem

Genesis 15:

• God tells Abraham he will have a son and his seed will multiply, Abraham believed and God counted it to him for righteousness. Abrahamic Covenant reiterated. Abraham prepares sacrifices, God walks the covenant ritual Himself, making it unconditional, while He puts Abraham in a deep sleep

Genesis 16:

• Ishmael born of Hagar, Sarah then despises her. Hagar goes to fountain, Angel of the Lord tells her Ishmael’s seed will multiply exceedingly. Abraham is 86

Genesis 17:

• Abrahamic Covenant reiterated and every man shall be circumcised as a token of the covenant. Abram changed to Abraham, Sarai changed to Sarah. Abraham is 99
• Sarah will have a son, he will be named Isaac and God will establish His everlasting covenant with him and his seed.

Genesis 18:

• God and 2 angels visit Abraham and he offers them 3 measures of meal, which becomes the fellowship offering. God says Sarah will bare child and she laughs. In Hebrew the root verb from which the word Isaac is derived means “to laugh”.
• Abraham bargains with God, while the 2 angels head to Sodom and Gomorrah, about not destroying the city for the righteous there.

Genesis 19:

• The 2 angels save Lot, his wife, and 2 daughters out of Sodom and Gomorrah. The angels destroy the city, but Lot’s wife looks back and is turned to ash by the burning.
• Lot’s 2 daughters feed him wine and sleep with him, baring Moab (father of the Moabites) by the elder and Benammi (father of the Ammonites) by the younger.

Genesis 20:

• Abraham moves to Gerar and tells King Abimeleck (a title of rulers of Philistia) that Sarah is his sister so that he would not be slain. Pagan practice would be to kill the husband and take the wife. God comes to Abimeleck and tells him he is a dead man because Sarah is Abraham’s wife. Abimeleck gives Abraham riches and tells them to go live anywhere in his land.

Genesis 21:

• Isaac is born Sarah is 90, Abraham is 100
• Hagar and Ishmael are cast out
• Abraham digs a well in Beersheba

Genesis 22:

• Abraham offers Isaac, God reiterates that He will multiply Abraham’s seed and in his seed all nations of the earth will be blessed

Genesis 23:

• Sarah dies at the age of 127 Abraham is 138

Genesis 24:

• Abraham sends his servant  (Eleazor) to find a wife for Isaac. He finds Rebekah, the daughter of Bethuel, the son of Milcah, the wife of Abraham’s borther Nahor. Isaac was comforted of Sarah’s death.

Genesis 25:

• Isaac was 40 when he married Rebekah
• Abraham marries Keturah
• Abraham dies and is buried with Sarah Abraham is 175
• Ishmael has 12 sons and dies at the age of 137

Genesis 26:

• Philistines, after Abraham dies, fill the wells that Abraham had dug with earth
